Here are a few reading activities. The goal is to read for 15 minutes a day. Please remember that "reading" does not necessarily mean just a book. It is word work, sounds, and stories. Not everything needs to be done in one night. Pick what works for your family and your child.  Some students are more engaged by online materials, while others need paper copies. I will do all that I can to provide materials for both needs. I have tried to make this child-friendly so that students can become more independent.  Past videos are saved at the bottom.

Read online with Epic- During school hours only:(

Epic has changed their free program now unfortunately. We can use it free during the day, but parents can opt to use it at home for a fee. If a student is at home during the day Monday to Friday for any reason, this should be able to be used. 
All of my students have a profile created for them on Epic. You will use the login information sent to you to find your profile. I will send you books on your Epic profile to try or you can choose your own. This site provides books that students can read on their own, ones that read to them, and comprehension questions to try. Students become very independent with this site quite quickly. It is free but the limit is 2 hours per week. Click on the EPIC image to go to Epic.

Epic is still our first site to use, as I can track the student's progress and I cannot on the following sites; however, they are great to use to mix it up a little. Have fun!
This site has both English Language Arts activities and Math for a variety of grades. 
ICT games has a lot of fun ways to learn through play. Math, reading, and writing practice is easy through these little games.

Starfall has a great selection of reading and math activities. It has many books that students can try to read on their own but have hint features as well. There are also phonics activities and word family books. A great site!
Reading: If you have a more confident reader, this site provides a lot of free books, but they do not have the hint features. Make sure you are in the "Free Books" section that I have linked here:
Reading: This site has lots of books, like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and other known stories. There is no hint feature on this site. Best for confident readers.

Tips for reading with your child:

  • If your child makes an error, point to the word and give them time to think. Encourage them to look at all of the sounds, try again, and support them in the area of the word in which they are struggling.
  • Prompt with questions: Does that use the letters that you see in the word? What letter blends do you see that you recognize? Have you seen that word before somewhere?
  • Chunk the words up into parts that can be managed.
  • Please do not ask them to look at the pictures! Not all words can be decoded with the help of a picture.
  • Model sounding out the word for your child. Use your finger under each part of the word that you sound out. Have them try it with you and then on their own. 
  • Be patient. Learning to read takes time. Sometimes, a word game can relieve the tension and provide practice with sounds and common words. 
  • Talk about what they have read:
    • Who were the characters?
    • What happened in the beginning?
    • What happened at the end?
    • What was your favourite part? Why?
    • Were you surprised by something?

I don't post dates because each student may need to revisit different videos depending on their learning journey. I don't want any child to feel behind based on dates. I do, however, usually post them in order as they are used.
